{"id":1028,"date":"2022-12-01T06:07:42","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T06:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.practicesolutionsinc.net\/blog\/?p=1028"},"modified":"2023-02-09T17:25:41","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T17:25:41","slug":"me-destroys-we","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.practicesolutionsinc.net\/blog\/2022\/12\/me-destroys-we\/","title":{"rendered":"Me Destroys We!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have the privilege of working with dental teams nationwide through my teambuilding Culture Camps!\u00a0 They are customized to meet the unique and specific needs of the practice and vary greatly in each office.\u00a0 However, every Culture Camp starts with a meeting on the first night with the leadership team.\u00a0 I start with them because everything begins and ends with their leadership.\u00a0 It\u2019s what leaders do, allow, or accept that cultivates the culture.\u00a0 If the leadership team is not aligned and cohesive it will be difficult to get the team aligned and cohesive.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oVJIhRLV2n8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I spend the first evening getting to know and building a relationship with the leadership team.\u00a0 We discuss their goals and obstacles with the practice, team, and each other.\u00a0 I refer to the leadership team as the \u201cwe team\u201d!\u00a0 I call them the \u201cwe team\u201d because leaders need to think as we instead of as me.\u00a0 We thinking\u201d cultivates alignment and cohesion.\u00a0 When leaders are aligned and cohesive, they communicate and work together better which produces a happier, healthier, and higher performing practice culture.<\/p>\n<p>One of the pitfalls I observe especially in high producing practices is discord amongst the leadership team.\u00a0 Often the more successful a practice is the more strife there seems to be between the leadership team.\u00a0 Success often inflames egos.\u00a0 It is dangerous when we allow success to go to our head.\u00a0 When it does, our ego takes over and we feel entitled.\u00a0 Entitlement changes our mindset from we to me.\u00a0 \u201cMe destroys we!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me creates an exaggerated pride, overwhelming self-confidence, and contempt for others.\u00a0 Taken to extreme it can become the acquired personality disorder \u201chubris syndrome.\u201d Scientific research defines it as a \u201cdisorder of the possession of power, particularly power which has been associated with overwhelming success, held for a period of years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is a difference between a healthy ego and an unhealthy one.\u00a0 Healthy egos are good and needed to succeed.\u00a0 When meeting and assessing the leadership team, I look for signs of an unhealthy ego that may undermine alignment, cohesiveness, and even greater success.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the most common sabotaging beliefs.\u00a0 Consider your own thinking and see if you might need to readjust your viewpoint.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I am the owner doctor, and I can do what I want.<\/li>\n<li>I am entitled to do what I want because I am the biggest producer.<\/li>\n<li>I only support my decisions because I have the most knowledge.<\/li>\n<li>I can never show when I am unsure or don\u2019t know the answer or it will make me look stupid.<\/li>\n<li>I can\u2019t admit to mistakes, or it will make me look weak.<\/li>\n<li>I will deflect and criticize others when I am challenged to not lose face.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An unhealthy ego narrows our perception and corrupts our behavior, often causing us to act against our core values.\u00a0 When we believe we\u2019re are the only one responsible for our success, we tend to be disrespectful, selfish, and unkind.\u00a0 After all, we don\u2019t need anyone else, and others are replaceable!\u00a0 This is especially true in challenging situations. An unhealthy ego is like a wall that stops us from learning from our failures. Our past success left unchecked can sabotage our future success!<\/p>\n<p>An unhealthy ego looks for information that confirms what it wants to believe. It makes us believe we are always right.\u00a0 We only see and hear things our way.\u00a0 We become susceptible like the emperor in the folktale The Emperor\u2019s New Clothes!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The result, we alienate the people we lead, the culture, and ultimately the patients.\u00a0 I love the quote \u201cEgo is a three-letter word that can destroy a big twelve-letter word called Relationship!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 We have all heard about great bands who had amazing success only to break up because of unhealthy egos.\u00a0 They became a me instead of a \u201cWe\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Their ego created me entitlement.\u00a0 Me entitlement ended their relationship and sabotaged their future success as a band!<\/p>\n<p>Healthy egos are good and needed to succeed.\u00a0 A healthy ego is confident and decisive.\u00a0 Yet, they know that there is more than just one way.\u00a0 They know they aren\u2019t always right.\u00a0 They encourage open dialogue and are open to feedback.\u00a0 They will support what is in the best interests of the practice, patients, and team (also referring doctors if they are a specialty practice).<\/p>\n<p>Behaviors of a healthy leadership ego are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are determined to make a difference.<\/li>\n<li>They know their why (sense of purpose).<\/li>\n<li>They are self-confident and secure.<\/li>\n<li>They are aware of their weaknesses and are comfortable in their skin.<\/li>\n<li>They reflect instead of deflect.<\/li>\n<li>They are approachable, open, and honest.<\/li>\n<li>They keep things in perspective.<\/li>\n<li>They admit when they are wrong.<\/li>\n<li>They allow themselves to be vulnerable.<\/li>\n<li>They are genuine and don\u2019t pretend to be something they are not.<\/li>\n<li>They are tolerant of people who have different views.<\/li>\n<li>They are willing to listen and accept feedback.<\/li>\n<li>They empower others to step up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No one is perfect, and our ego will get the best of us at times.\u00a0 Being open to feedback from our co-leaders, team members, and using a coach who can observe and advise are great ways to become a more aligned and cohesive \u201cWe\u201d!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have the privilege of working with dental teams nationwide through my teambuilding Culture Camps!\u00a0 They are customized to meet the unique and specific needs of the practice and vary greatly in each office.\u00a0 However, every Culture Camp starts with a meeting on the first night with the leadership team.\u00a0 I start with them because [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,16,215,18,22,23,30,32,33,34,39,44,197,46,47,49,50,53,195,196,1,185,184],"tags":[61,63,68,73,76,84,88,96,98,121,124,149,153,160,166,167,170,175],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Me Destroys We!
