And it&#8217;s big stuff! \u00a0Our feelings are what drive our actions and our actions generate our outcome! \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<strong>Something happens, we assign meaning to it, the meaning creates a feeling, the feeling drives a reaction!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0We can change our results when we recognize how our feelings affect our outcome and learn how to control versus be controlled by them!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n5W-wDGm4QM\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Haven&#8217;t we all at one time or another reacted to something negatively because of how we felt at the moment and regretted it later.\u00a0 It can happen to even the best of us.\u00a0 However, when we continue to allow our feelings to control our reactions we become what I refer to as an emotional reactor.\u00a0 Emotional reactors\u00a0allow their\u00a0feelings instead of their mind to be in the driver seat of their actions!\u00a0 They often lose control and lash out in volatile explosions of anger, judgment, criticism etc!\u00a0 They are extremely dangerous and difficult to be around because you never know when they will erupt.\u00a0 Often times they hurt the ones they love the most.\u00a0 Their path is strewn with the fallout of\u00a0damaged and broken relationships.\u00a0 The good news is we can end the emotional reaction cycle by understanding it and putting our mind back in the driver seat!<\/p>\n<p>The Emotional Reaction Cycle starts when we assign meaning to an experience.\u00a0 Our reality is based on what we believe to be true about an experience at the time it happens and how we label it.\u00a0 Our mind filters the world we live in.\u00a0 Our reality is really just our perception.\u00a0 A group of\u00a0people could share an experience and have a different reality based on how they filter\u00a0the experience.\u00a0 The two filters that affect our reality most often are Generalization and Distortion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Generalization is when something is similar or familiar to a past experience and we assign the same meaning. \u00a0It can\u00a0greatly contribute to limiting beliefs.\u00a0 For example, all people with blonde hair are not smart.\u00a0 (Just thought I would throw that in as I am blonde&#8230;or at least that is my current color of choice). \u00a0 Another example is when someone reminds us of someone we know and we either instantly like or dislike them based on the other relationship. \u00a0Or we are unwilling to try something because it is similar to something we failed at before.<\/p>\n<p>Distortion is changing an experience from what it actually was to some modified form of what it is.\u00a0 Distortion happens when you remember a moment of an event as representing the entire thing. Usually it is something negative that over shadows everything else.\u00a0 For example you receive 10\u00a0positive\u00a0comments and one negative comment from your patients and you\u00a0focus only on what you are doing wrong.\u00a0 Or you define your day by the one thing that was\u00a0difficult versus the 100 things that went well.\u00a0 Or we define other people only by their mistakes or by one characteristic we dislike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once we realize that our reality is really only<strong> our<\/strong> perception of the experience based on our filters we open ourselves up to other possibilities and can change how we feel. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<strong>The awesome part is it takes less than 60 seconds to change your feelings to change your results!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Here are 5 steps to help you change how you feel and stop the emotional reaction cycle. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<em><strong>The first step<\/strong><\/em> is recognizing how you are feeling.\u00a0 Actually ask yourself; how do I feel right at this moment.\u00a0 Identify the feeling or emotion\u00a0by saying I am feeling&#8230;frustrated\u00a0or tired\u00a0or angry or helpless or afraid or jealous\u00a0etc.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The seconds step<\/strong><\/em> is to visualize the\u00a0negative feeling\u00a0as a little monster sitting on your right shoulder dictating how you should feel.\u00a0 (My monster looks a lot like the\u00a0little\u00a0green mucus guy from the Mucinex commercial.)\u00a0 Then address your monster and send it packing. I\u00a0say to my monster &#8220;I see you and you have no control over me&#8221; and then I physically flick it\u00a0off my shoulder!\u00a0\u00a0You may have to flick the monster off several times&#8230;they are pretty persistent little devils.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s be honest sometimes it feels good to let off steam.\u00a0 However, a moment of release is never worth hurting someone and even possibly destroying the relationship.\u00a0 Words do hurt and are very powerful.\u00a0 Words can destroy relationships even with the people we love the most.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0The third step<\/strong><\/em> is to re-hardwire how you are feeling by not taking things so personal.\u00a0 Life doesn&#8217;t happen to us personally; it just happens.\u00a0 People behave towards us based on their limiting beliefs of reality.\u00a0 Yet we often take it as personal.\u00a0 Have you ever said, &#8220;Why does this always have to happen to me?&#8221;\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t happen to you&#8230;you chose to own it.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t like the game Dodge Ball where some universal force picks you out of all the people on the rest of the planet and decides to throw something at you!\u00a0 It may sometimes feel like it but stuff happens and it&#8217;s not personal.\u00a0 There are just a lot of flying balls out there and we occasionally run into one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The fourth step<\/strong><\/em> is to re-program how we feel.\u00a0 A physical emotion only lasts 30 seconds.\u00a0\u00a0 We extend the emotion when we continue to rehash our feelings over and over.\u00a0 To change how you feel choose words to\u00a0describe how you want to feel.\u00a0 Now it&#8217;s time for the physical reset.\u00a0 Slow down your thinking in order to stop spinning.\u00a0 Start by taking three deep breaths in and out to become present.\u00a0 Say out loud the feeling(s)\u00a0you want to feel.\u00a0 &#8220;I feel happy or I feel at peace!&#8221; Now imagine\u00a0a time when you felt that emotion and\u00a0immerse yourself in that\u00a0experience.\u00a0 Give yourself at least 30 seconds to really enjoy that memory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The fifth step and final step<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is to choose how you want to react. \u00a0\u00a0Ask yourself, &#8220;How would I react if I were being my best me or the person I want to become?&#8221;\u00a0 Aristotle said it best when he said <em>&#8220;We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0How would the person you want to become or the people you admire and respect most behave in this situation!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Ta-dah!\u00a0 You have just changed how you feel, how you reacted and your results in less than 60 seconds!<\/p>\n<p>My hope for you moving forward is that whatever may come your way you will come from a place of curiosity instead of judgment and criticism.\u00a0 Please be careful about what you label things. What we label it is what our reality becomes.\u00a0 Label the experience or event interesting instead of good, bad, right, wrong, negative or positive.\u00a0 We really don&#8217;t know until we have reached the end of our journey.\u00a0 \u00a0It is only than that we can look back and see the\u00a0outcome and whether it brought us success or failure. \u00a0Often times it may feel\u00a0grueling and\u00a0difficult short term.\u00a0 However, it may be\u00a0just what\u00a0we needed to shape, change and help us grow\u00a0and empower us to live our dreams.\u00a0 Happy feelings to you!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month&#8217;s newsletter is dedicated to the touchy feeling stuff!
