{"id":310,"date":"2014-02-01T08:00:18","date_gmt":"2014-02-01T08:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.practicesolutionsinc.net\/?p=310"},"modified":"2014-02-01T08:00:18","modified_gmt":"2014-02-01T08:00:18","slug":"dysfuntional-to-dynamic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.practicesolutionsinc.net\/blog\/2014\/02\/dysfuntional-to-dynamic\/","title":{"rendered":"Dysfuntional to Dynamic!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">My newsletters are often a\u00a0reflection of what I observe when working with dental teams.\u00a0 The phrase <em>&#8220;we are just like one big family&#8221;<\/em> is used by many dental teams to describe their office environment.\u00a0 One would assume it be a positive statement.\u00a0 However, I have found in many cases the opposite is true.\u00a0 They were indeed like one big family&#8230;one big dysfunctional family! This month&#8217;s newsletter is dedicated\u00a0to changing your team&#8217;s relationships from dysfunctional to\u00a0dynamic!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ohz3gAKqeG4?rel=0\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The dictionary defines dysfunction as\u00a0a behavior pattern that undermines\u00a0team stability.\u00a0\u00a0Some examples of\u00a0dysfunctional behaviors are being tardy, unreliable, dishonest, unsupportive, disrespectful or unkind.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">When I was in grade school we\u00a0received progress reports or as we called them report cards.\u00a0 There was an entire\u00a0section on\u00a0conduct.\u00a0\u00a0Conduct was broken down into 5 areas.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Observes regulations<\/li>\n<li>Works and plays well with others<\/li>\n<li>Respect for property<\/li>\n<li>Respect for authority<\/li>\n<li>Is courteous in speech and manner<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">You either received and S for satisfactory or a U for unsatisfactory to rate your behavior.\u00a0 Thankfully I received all S&#8217;s!\u00a0 I know I am really dating myself here.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Many of us seem to have forgotten or maybe have never been taught that we are responsible for our conduct at work.\u00a0It is not the doctor(s) and manager&#8217;s responsibility to make us play well with others!\u00a0 It is OURS!\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Here are three behaviors\u00a0to shift dysfunctional patterns\u00a0into dynamic\u00a0patterns\u00a0and start playing well together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Filtering<\/strong> &#8211; For some reason we feel once we say we are a family we don&#8217;t need to filter what we say to each other.\u00a0 We justify it by saying we are just being honest or we have to be authentic to our feelings.\u00a0 After all we can&#8217;t help how we feel!\u00a0 (Oh really&#8230;read my December 2013 newsletter) We lose our politeness and kindness towards each other.\u00a0 Our words are often direct and hurtful.\u00a0 We believe because we are like family it is okay to behave in this manner.\u00a0 That our co-workers should just be able to handle whatever we say.\u00a0 The reality is words cut deep and can destroy even real families.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t we all know someone who no longer speaks to certain family members&#8230;maybe even you?\u00a0 It is important to think before you speak to avoid jeopardizing the relationship.\u00a0 Be respectful of how the other person might feel.\u00a0 Treat each other with the same kindness and politeness that you would if you were on your best behavior with a stranger.\u00a0 After all why share the best of you only with strangers&#8230;why not give your best to those you work with and care about most.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><strong>Apologizing<\/strong> &#8211; If you make a mistake, be sincere and apologize as soon as possible. Don&#8217;t try to hide it, ignore it or pretend it doesn&#8217;t matter.\u00a0 When we don&#8217;t apologize for our mistakes or wrongdoings as they happen we leave unresolved issues.\u00a0 It is human nature to store unresolved issues.\u00a0 Some of us our so good at storing our issues that we have an entire storage unit full.\u00a0 Until finally one day a blow up happens&#8230;and the storage unit gates fly open and every unresolved issue comes hurling out.\u00a0 Try to apologize the same day if at all possible to resolve issues and keep them from being stored. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Forgiving<\/strong> &#8211; In order to move forward and work together in a functional relationship we need to forgive each other.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t tell you how many times I observe two team members who don&#8217;t work well together anymore because of something that happened years ago.\u00a0 I would like you to consider forgiveness in this light.\u00a0 Imagine the worst thing you have ever done in your life.\u00a0 What if it was written on your forehead in permanent marker for all the world to see?\u00a0\u00a0 That was your reputation and what you were held accountable to forever.\u00a0 In essence that is what we are doing when we are unwilling to forgive others.\u00a0 We are holding others accountable for the worst behavior they ever did to us.\u00a0 The best way to forgive is to stop trying to agree on who was at fault in the past.\u00a0 Instead focus on the future and what you can change or do differently to make the relationship work. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Implementing these three positive behaviors will help you change your dental family from dysfunctional to a dynamic!
