Sane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whew!\u00a0 What a year 2020 has been so far!\u00a0 I don\u2019t know about you, but I feel like the rug was pulled out from under my feet.\u00a0 All my hard work and carefully laid plans disintegrated when the Covid-19 storm hit.\u00a0 My emotions were like a roller coaster ride ranging from anger and frustration to fear, confusion and sadness.\u00a0 That\u2019s just to name a few.\u00a0\u00a0 Normally I maintain a very positive equilibrium and I was definitely off kilter.\u00a0 I knew I had to get a handle on the negative emotions to get back on track.\u00a0 Otherwise, the negative would crowd out my optimistic outlook.<\/p>\n<p>After some reflection, I realized I needed to search out the positive in the current situation; and let go of the negative that I could not control.\u00a0 I focused on the positive upside of more \u201ctime.\u00a0 I now had time to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spend with my husband and dog<\/li>\n<li>Call and zoom with family and friends<\/li>\n<li>Social distance with neighbors<\/li>\n<li>Complete projects around the house including organizing and cleaning<\/li>\n<li>Work in my yard<\/li>\n<li>Take more walks<\/li>\n<li>Work out more<\/li>\n<li>create newsletters, articles, webinars and presentations<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer complimentary help to my clients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I stopped focusing on the downside and things I couldn\u2019t control such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uncertain future<\/li>\n<li>Loss business and income<\/li>\n<li>Limited interaction with others<\/li>\n<li>Restricted travel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am sure I am not the only person struggling with trying to stay positive.\u00a0 There will be a wide range of emotions when we go back to work.\u00a0 The wheels are going to fall off if we pretend nothing happened and we just bury ourselves working to catch up.\u00a0 It will be critical to schedule time to communicate daily as a team.\u00a0 This includes the doctor(s).\u00a0 A huddle, first thing in the morning creates the perfect opportunity to check in with each other.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ryBmyvPzzj0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Have the entire team share their emotions.\u00a0 How are they feeling in the moment and why?\u00a0 Do they have feelings of fear, anger, judgment, sadness or hurt feelings etc.?\u00a0\u00a0 What does the team need from each other to feel safe and work together better?\u00a0 What can they do to help each other more?\u00a0 It is important for the team to be sensitive to each other\u2019s needs.\u00a0 We tend to think others have the same feelings and needs.\u00a0 Avoid judging and criticizing if someone is more emotional and needs more reassurance to feel safe and comfortable.\u00a0 There is not a right or wrong way to feel.\u00a0 Feelings are feelings!<\/p>\n<p>Trying to stuff our emotions and pretend we are all okay will lead to meltdowns.\u00a0 If we don\u2019t discuss our emotions, we will eventually burst, and everything will come spewing out.\u00a0 When we reach that level, we are often no longer coming from a place of care or concern, but instead a place of anger.\u00a0 When we act out in judgment, criticism, anger or negativity we can expect a like response.\u00a0 This is what I refer to as an emotional reaction cycle.<\/p>\n<p>We can avoid emotional reactions by taking time to start our day with a team huddle.\u00a0 Initially we may need to extend our normal huddle time to accommodate discussing our teams needs and emotions in addition to our patients.<\/p>\n<p>Be mindful of tone and body language when asking questions.\u00a0 The questions I suggest are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How are you feeling about being here today?<\/li>\n<li>Tell me why you feel this way?<\/li>\n<li>What leads you to believe\u2026?<\/li>\n<li>Tell me more about\u2026?<\/li>\n<li>Help me understand why\u2026?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These questions work great at home as well.<\/p>\n<p>Do a recap of the prior day to discuss and fine tune systems and processes.\u00a0 This will help build clarity and confidence among the team.\u00a0 What worked and what didn\u2019t?\u00a0 Define action steps to overcome obstacles.\u00a0 Avoid the blame game.\u00a0 We are all in this together and the more we help each other the better off we will all be.\u00a0 Practice verbal skills, role playing and the physical walk through to be proficient when interacting with patients.\u00a0 This will help the team feel confident which will ensure the patients feel confident and safe under their care.<\/p>\n<p>Together we will rise up!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whew!\u00a0 What a year 2020 has been so far!\u00a0 I don\u2019t know about you, but I feel like the rug was pulled out from under my feet.\u00a0 All my hard work and carefully laid plans disintegrated when the Covid-19 storm hit.\u00a0 My emotions were like a roller coaster ride ranging from anger and frustration to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,4,5,6,186,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,194,24,25,199,27,28,29,191,30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,192,56,43,44,197,190,45,188,46,47,48,49,50,187,51,52,53,54,195,196,1,184,185,55],"tags":[61,63,68,70,73,76,82,84,87,88,89,92,93,94,96,98,101,107,111,120,121,124,126,131,138,140,141,144,146,149,153,154,159,160,167,169,170,175,178,179,182],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Communication to Stay Safe &amp;
