{"id":984,"date":"2022-04-01T06:33:29","date_gmt":"2022-04-01T06:33:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.practicesolutionsinc.net\/blog\/?p=984"},"modified":"2022-04-01T21:06:42","modified_gmt":"2022-04-01T21:06:42","slug":"toxic-performers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.practicesolutionsinc.net\/blog\/2022\/04\/toxic-performers\/","title":{"rendered":"Toxic Performers!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The current staffing shortage has created greater opportunities for toxic performers.\u00a0 Maybe you even have a few!\u00a0 The toxic performer is the team member who is extremely skilled at their job.\u00a0 They excel in front of the doctor(s), patients, and anyone else they feel is necessary to keep their status.\u00a0 They are super performers when they want to be.\u00a0 That\u2019s the performer part.\u00a0 However, the toxic side is their other side.\u00a0 This is the side they save for their unfortunate co-workers or anyone they deem irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sjZc1xr1hfU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Some signs of toxic behaviors are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Air of superiority<\/li>\n<li>Cynical<\/li>\n<li>Closed to feedback<\/li>\n<li>Unwilling to train<\/li>\n<li>Gossip<\/li>\n<li>Excuses<\/li>\n<li>Deflection<\/li>\n<li>Sarcasm<\/li>\n<li>Blame<\/li>\n<li>Drama<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Evaluate your current team.\u00a0 Are there any team members that fit the description of a toxic performer?\u00a0 Here comes the difficult part.\u00a0 This person is often the right hand of the doctor or manager.\u00a0 They are highly skilled and high performers.\u00a0 Therefore, it is extremely difficult to even consider letting them go.\u00a0 Especially with the fear of finding skilled new team members.\u00a0 Instead, the toxic behavior is allowed to continue in exchange for the performer side.<\/p>\n<p>I receive the following response when I ask doctors and or managers this question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you allow the toxic performer team member to continue to be a part of the team and practice when they are unwilling to support the practice values and our toxic to their co-workers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudy Kay, you don\u2019t understand.\u00a0 They are really, really good at what they do.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have anyone else that can perform at their level.\u00a0 And it is difficult to find skilled new team members.\u00a0 But I would let them go if they EVER behaved that way towards the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how good of a performer they are, keeping a toxic performer is disastrous and will sabotage your practice culture.<\/p>\n<p>It only takes one toxic performer to create a culture of chaos and negativity. Toxic performers make it feel unsafe and stressful for their co-workers. The rest of the team is on alert waiting for the toxic performers next sarcastic remark, outburst, or retaliation.\u00a0 Toxic performers harm the productivity and morale of everyone around them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They purposely hoard information and don\u2019t train others to their level, in fear if they did it might sacrifice their stability.<\/li>\n<li>They play the team against each other to divide and conquer.<\/li>\n<li>Their unsupportive actions undermine the practice values.<\/li>\n<li>The team loses trust and respect for their doctor, manager, and co-workers.<\/li>\n<li>The culture has become filled with favoritism and double standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A double standard is a rule or principle which is unfairly applied in different ways to different people.\u00a0 Double standards never work.\u00a0 The team is just as important as the patients.\u00a0 Treat your team as well as you treat your patients.\u00a0 Take care of your team and they will take care of the patients.<\/p>\n<p>Three powerful assessment questions regarding behaviors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does this behavior support the practice culture values?<\/li>\n<li>Would I accept this behavior from another team member?<\/li>\n<li>Would I allow this behavior towards a patient?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you answered no to all three questions\u2026it is time to address the toxic performer\u2019s behavior towards their co-workers.\u00a0 Ask the toxic performer if they are willing to step up and be supportive of the team and culture values.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be surprised if the toxic performer makes excuses for their behavior and take it as a personal attack against them.\u00a0 They will often hold grudges, blame, and complain how they are the victim.\u00a0 They need to verbally agree, and their behavior change needs to immediate and consistent.\u00a0 If they don\u2019t agree or if the toxic behavior happens again, invite them to step out and no longer be a part of the team.<\/p>\n<p>Never sacrifice the entire practice culture for one toxic performer regardless of their talent and productivity.\u00a0 Nor allow a team member to continue to treat their co-workers poorly.\u00a0 A benchmark I suggest is would you allow that same behavior towards a patient.\u00a0 You will lose good team members and destroy the practice culture if you allow the toxic performer to continue their toxic behavior.\u00a0 It may feel very daunting.\u00a0 However, other dental offices have been in this situation and not only survived but thrived.\u00a0\u00a0 They found that once they let the toxic performer go other team members were able to step up. \u00a0They were no longer held back by the toxic performer.\u00a0 Create a culture where the team (including doctors) treats each other as well as they treat their patients and become tremendous performers!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The current staffing shortage has created greater opportunities for toxic performers.\u00a0 Maybe you even have a few!\u00a0 The toxic performer is the team member who is extremely skilled at their job.\u00a0 They excel in front of the doctor(s), patients, and anyone else they feel is necessary to keep their status.\u00a0 They are super performers when [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,16,215,18,19,22,23,26,29,30,32,33,34,35,39,41,42,192,197,45,47,51,53,54,217,195,196,1,55],"tags":[63,68,70,73,76,82,84,88,89,91,93,96,98,107,110,121,124,140,144,146,149,154,160,170,212,179,182],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Toxic Performers!
